2023-05-202023-05-20924A desirable privation: Exploring silence as a mode of zoo visiting
https://trace.journal.fi/article/view/116665

This article describes and discusses a set of exercises in silent zoo visiting conducted at two zoos in the Southwest of the UK in 2019. The visits were part of a wider project on the auditory culture of zoos, institutions which have tended to be analysed by reference to their concern with the visual display of captive other-than-human animals (henceforth animals). Linking ideas on silence that have emerged from work in anthropology and sound studies respectively, the article explores the notion that among many other affordances, silence can generate opportunities for reflection and the consideration of alternatives, in this case in relation to a prevailing zoo visiting culture often characterised by loud anthropogenic sound. Examining extracts and observations from discussions among participants, the article illustrates how this novel form of visiting fostered a variety of types and qualities of experience. It also provided an impetus for participants to notice and focus on specific animals and aspects of animal lives they might not otherwise have considered. Such meditation could foster feelings of connection to particular zoo animals, while also opening up possibilities for more detached contemplation. The silent visits led participants to produce critical perspectives on conventional zoo visiting, and to imagine future possibilities for the auditory culture of zoos. The article shows that silence can serve as a productive methodological tool in the exploration of human-animal relations, and demonstrates how sound is integral to the formation of those relations within, and by implication beyond, the zoo.
Tom RiceAdam ReedAlexander Badman-KingSamantha HurnPaul Rose

https://trace.journal.fi/article/view/121716

Sanna Lillbroända-AnnalaOscar Winberg

https://trace.journal.fi/article/view/121735

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the challenges in applying Nussbaum’s capability approach to animals, as refracted through the lens of environmental justice (justice among humans on environmental issues and risks) and ecological justice (justice to non-human nature) in Schlosberg’s sense. Comparing and contrasting intra- and intergenerational justice for animals within the environmental and ecological justice frameworks, I demonstrate why capabilities-based multispecies justice can provide some benefits in overcoming ecological vulnerability. In this context, I point out the methodological pitfalls that environmental and ecological justice face in their attempts at eradicating unequal vulnerabilities embedded into some either-or dilemmas by exploring how the vulnerabilities in question negatively affect animals’ positive and negative rights.
Silviya Serafimova

https://trace.journal.fi/article/view/120521

Ireland found itself in a lockdown to combat the international spread of the SAR-CoV-2 virus beginning in March of 2020. This paper presents the initial impact that the initial lockdown and accompanying social distancing measures had on Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind (IGDB). Twenty-eight interviews were conducted with twenty-six interlocutors, including IGDB staff and clients, professionals within the guide dog sector, and locals to Cork City, Ireland. Findings show that lockdown measures impacted the education and work-lives of the guide dogs and instructors. Guide dogs lived in temporary homes rather than in the center’s kennels, which seems to improve their relaxation and education. Although the instructors may have benefitted from working outdoors with canines, they encountered challenges while teaching clients and guide dogs. They also needed to motivate the canines more to find a purpose in their work which had come to feel like the “same old ding dong”, with most destinations closed. The clients, especially those who experienced their first class during 2020, felt the loss of connection and support offered in the group class pre-pandemic. Despite these obstacles, interlocutors managed these obstacles well and looked optimistically toward the future.
Tiamat Warda

https://trace.journal.fi/article/view/120353

Learning to live with unloved others is crucial in the ecological crisis. Unloved wasps are feared and disliked for their sting. Understanding of their ecological importance is increasing, however. Human-wasp encounters are changing with environmental changes, and strategies for multispecies cohabitation are needed. This multispecies study highlights features of wasp biology affecting human-wasp encounters and analyzes how conflicted human-wasp relations could be mitigated. The geographical focus is Finland, in the Northern boreal region. Biological analysis specified spatiotemporal aspects affecting human-wasp encounters: human and wasp habitats and preferences overlap ubiquitously. From a media analysis, we identified contextual strategies for living with wasps: exterminating, repelling, relocating, and giving space. Wasps do not receive only bad press – human-wasp relations are diverse and contextual. Knowledge of wasp ecology may allow for cultivating response-ability in multispecies encounters. Media provides information and narratives that allow reinterpreting wasp “aggression” as a vulnerable multispecies condition. Human-wasp encounters are corporeal and often preferably avoided. Therefore, methods that allow developing intimacy without proximity may be used for reflecting on human-wasp relations. One such method is crocheting decoy wasp nests. Human-wasp encounters could be mitigated by species-specific strategies that assess the risk involved. However, developing such strategies is difficult because wasps are often confused with other black-and-yellow insects.
Minna SantaojaJyrki TorniainenAtte Komonen

2023-05-202023-05-20912014610.23984/fjhas.120353Aitoutta koukuttamassa: Taimenkantojen alkuperän merkityksestä virkistyskalastajien kalastuskokemuksille
https://trace.journal.fi/article/view/119606

Artikkelissa käsitellään taimenkantojen alkuperän merkitystä virkistyskalastajille ja heidän kalastuskokemuksilleen. Vapaa-ajan kalastus lukeutuu Suomen suosituimpiin harrastuksiin, samalla kun useat lohikalalajit ovat elinvoimaisuudeltaan pahoin vaarantuneita. Lajien uhanalaisuus johtuu elinympäristöjen häviämisestä ja ylikalastuksesta. Kalastuskohteissa luontaisen lisääntymisen puuttumista onkin kompensoitu kaloja istuttamalla.
Artikkelin aineistona käytetään Ruunaan koskien kalastajille kohdennetun kyselyn vastauksia. Tulosten perusteella pyydettävien taimenten luontaisuudella on esimerkiksi virkistyskalastajien kalastuskokemuksia syventävä vaikutus, koska kalastajat kokevat eroja eri alkuperää olevien taimenten käytöksessä ja pyynnin palkitsevuudessa.
Timo Haapasalo
